Extra Curricular
Activities:
In order to get into veterinary school, it is important to be
well-rounded and have multiple activities that you are involved in. Starting
Freshman year, be involved in as many different things as possible. It is
important to remember not to try to commit yourself to to many activities
though. Most schools have a Pre-Veterinary Club. This is useful because it
connects you with other Pre-Veterinary majors, as well as provides information
about vet school. Extracurricular activities, including sports, honor
societies, and service organizations are also a good idea. Other organizations
of interest for the pre-vet minded at Truman include:
The
Show Cattle Team,
Equestrian
Team,
Horseman's Association, Herpetology Club.
You must also remember to job shadow. Find a veterinarian in
your area who will allow you to shadow them as they work; the more hours the
better. At the University of Missouri-Columbia, for example a minimum of 40
hours is required, however most students go in with about 200 hours (both large
and small animal hours are required).
